In the mid 90s Ross Evans from Stanford University developed an extension for a mountain bike capable of carrying heavier than usual loads, to be used in a project in Nicaragua called „Bikes Not Bombs“. Three years later he founded Xtracycle Inc. and produced and sold the bicycle extension as a self-assembly kit called: Free Radical Extension.

Vienna's Cargo Bike Collective
The cargo bike is an increasingly frequent sight on the streets of Vienna. Independent of fuel and high running costs, it offers an efficient alternative to engine-driven vehicles and can be used with ease by all cyclists.
In 2010, a group of bicycle enthusiasts founded the “Lastenradkollektiv” (“Cargo Bike Collective”) as a self-governing and non-profit association that aims for making the benefits of cargo bikes available to all. This cycling story presents the collective’s way of providing a self-governing method of using cargo bikes in the city.

Luca Feletti, a newly graduated Architect at the University of Ferrara, elaborated a prototype for an ultimate power-assisted flexy-bike. In the 3icy the front wheel is a removable wheel to leave the place to a cargo box or a taxi seat to transport - depending on your needs - yourself, goods and people. Luca, introduced his idea to AMI staff to collect information about cargo bikes and analyzed documents available on the CycleLogistics Project web site.
