As the cargo bike market is growing, security standards and product liability are gaining in importance.
The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has established a working group "carrier cycles" to develop an EN standard for cargo bikes. The working group met for the first time in January 2020. Erik Driessen of the Dutch cargo bike manufacturer Urban Arrow is chair of the working group. Joost Witsenburg of the Dutch standardisation organisation NEN is the secretary. National industry standards for cargo bikes have been established in Germany (DIN 79010:2020-02) and France (NF R30-050-1) before. They serve as a basis for the EN standard. The current status of the European standardisation process is documented in the working programme on the CEN webpage.
All cargo bike manufacturers and other stakeholders are encouraged to approach their national standardisation organisation to be delegated to the CEN working group.
CCCB partner European Cycle Logistics Federation (ECLF) is a CEN liaison partner and consults with members of the European Expert Group on Cargo Bikes and Cycle Logistics to support the European standardisation work. CCCB partner cargobike.jetzt represents ECLF in the CEN working group.
